I posed the following question at Paleo f(x)™ 2014 on the panel for “Living a Happy Intentional Life”. Here I pose it again and will ask it over and over, to inspire people to act, to move, to think, to be, and to do. Mostly to do.
Here’s the question: “What would you do—what could you do—if you had no limits? If you knew you could not fail?”
There was banter around this what-if… and much of it had to do with how “impossible” that scenario is. But what if it’s already happening?
Whatever your answer was to that question, I want you to ask yourself why you aren’t doing that thing right now. What’s holding you back?
Your limits and fear of failure are self-imposed. They exist only in your mind. Not in reality. You cannot fail when taking action. Failure is only failure if you don’t try.
We are our own biggest limits
Humans are strange creatures filled with self-doubt, worry, and concern.
Being the dominant, stronger, intelligent beings at the top of the food chain, we shouldn’t be bothered by any of these problems. We have all the power but often fail to live up to our own abilities. We can be, do, think and exist however we choose, and yet we don’t move forward for fear of being misunderstood, or worse, of becoming powerful.
Ahhhh, that’s an interesting concept. We don’t feel worthy. We don’t feel we have a right to be, do, think and exist as our authentic selves, or to chase our wildest dreams.
Why? If we have the imagination, why shouldn’t we? Why else would we have the gift of imagination, if not for the ability to put it into play, to make it be, to create it, to commission it and make it possible? Is our imagination simply here for amusement? To drive us all stark raving mad? I don’t believe so. It’s here to drive our ingenuity to depths unknown, to places never before seen and to make the seemingly impossible possible.
You have an inner drive as a human to be, do, think and exist in infinite ways. Remember the big dreams you had as a kid? Why aren’t you doing what you dreamed of then? Why is it kids only believe in dreams? When do we stop dreaming? Life experience makes us even more creative and effective. This experience should help us dream bigger, not cause us to stop dreaming. And yet we still stop.
Why you should stop putting limits on yourself
This one’s personal.
My daughter (and Keith’s cherished step-daughter) Brittani, we called her B, was killed in a car accident 3 days before her 23rd birthday. It was just one week before her college graduation as a music and worship ministry major.
She had chosen a life in missionary work and had begun that pursuit. In her short life, she managed to touch thousands of people’s lives and change them profoundly.
We felt there must be a way to carry on her legacy. However, her gifts were music and worship.
Ours are food, nutrition, health and fitness.
B’s many accomplishments in her 23 years taught us that life is too short to worry about failure. We chose to work with our gifts by changing lives through spreading the message of health, wellness, nutrition and fitness.
We chose to take huge risks, and Paleo f(x)™ was born of the decisions to remove our man-made limits on what was possible.
Now, Paleo f(x)™ is the largest Paleo event in the world and is spreading the Paleo message of health and helping to substantially grow the movement. Thousands of people are being helped through the messages of the hundreds of people that take part in Paleo f(x)™, and B’s legacy of changing lives lives on through us. We had to drop the fear and take action, knowing that not moving would be a failure.
Our Paleo f(x)™ speakers have removed their limits, too
On that 2014 Paleo f(x)™ “Living a Happy, Intentional Life” panel, Darryl Edwards told the story of how he changed the trajectory of his life. Or rather – how a major, catastrophic event changed it.
He was a highly-paid software engineer at an investment bank when the subway in London was bombed. Darryl was just one train car away from the explosion and already in poor health.
After this tragic experience, he decided his life needed a higher purpose and more meaning. He quit his job, launched Primal Play, downsized his belongings, simplified his life, and has never looked back.
Today, he is a best-selling author, sought-after speaker, major fitness mind, and has impacted lives all over the world. This is the awesome stuff that can happen when you remove your self-imposed limits.
We have more power than we think
Free yourself from being ruled by fear. Know that you have charge over what is possible. Do the impossible. Dare to chase your dreams like you did as a child. You have no limits and will not fail.
I suggest you do what you would do if you instinctively knew these things. Because they are true.
Don’t worry that you might fail, because your only failure will be not to try at all.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson
