The Danger of Ketogenic Diets: Why Most of Us Shouldn’t Do It

The therapeutic value of nutritional ketosis has been established for several neurodegenerative diseases and possibly for some cancers. However, how ketogenic diets work to mitigate these life-threatening diseases should reinforce the concept that ketosis is only appropriate in certain, very specific health situations. Ketogenic diets are known to suppress sex hormone production, potentially causing infertility, and to suppress the immune system, potentially causing disease flares and increasing susceptibility to infection. These effects have the capacity to do harm to the unknowing dieter.
