Russ Crandall is the home chef and blogger behind The Domestic Man, where he focuses on traditional recipes that are inherently gluten-free and Paleo-friendly. His blog was a finalist in the 2013 Saveur Magazine Best Food Blog Awards and he was the 2013 winner of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund’s Baconpalooza cooking competition, where he was crowned the “Baron of Bacon.” His first cookbook, The Ancestral Table: Traditional Recipes for a Paleo Lifestyle (Feb 2014, Victory Belt Publishing), features historical and traditional foods from all over the world.
After suffering a debilitating stroke at the age of 24 and being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease at the age of 26, Russ elected to undergo a risky open-heart surgery designed to alleviate his symptoms at the age of 27. The surgery was unsuccessful and Russ faced a lifetime of heavy immunosuppressant steroid therapy until discovering the Paleo Diet in 2010 (at age 30), which caused an almost complete remission in his symptoms nearly overnight. Since then, Russ has become an advocate for the Paleo template and works tirelessly to develop recipes that are both nutritious and overwhelmingly delicious.
Russ currently lives in the Baltimore, MD area with his wife Janey, son Oliver, and their cat named Chicken. He serves as a Russian translator in the US Navy.
