Insect Protein: Sustainable, Ethical, Healthy and Delicious

Gabi Lewis, founder of Exo, argues that eating insect protein makes a lot of sense. Insects are a uniquely sustainable source of protein: they produce virtually no methane, require little feed, water and space — and thus, represent a viable solution to feeding a growing global population.

Due their simpler nervous systems and lower space requirements, raising insects present fewer ethical issues than raising cows, pigs, chickens, or fish. Insect protein is healthy: amino acid profiles and micronutrients compare favorably to those of traditional livestock. And insects can be delicious — just consider their close relatives in Western diets: shrimp and lobster. Insects are an untapped resource and a promising contribution to contemporary Western diets.
